Former world No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro has confirmed that he will make his long-awaited comeback in Buenos Aires next week. Del Potro, now ranked at No. 757 in the world, last played at the Queen’s Club in the June of 2019.
Del Potro suffered a major knee injury at the Queen’s Club three years ago and since then underwent four knee surgeries to repair the damage. Del Potro admitted making a comeback in front of his home fans in Buenos Aires is going to be “very special.”
“It will be very special to come back to the tour in Buenos Aires and play in Rio, too,” del Potro said in a statement shared by Rio Open organizers. “I have worked a lot and made all the effort to be with you in the next few weeks”.
Del Potro set for a second Buenos Aires appearance
Del Potro, 33, debuted at the Buenos Aires event 16 years ago in 2006. Back then, del Potro suffered a first round defeat to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Del Potro went to last year’s US Open and there he spoke about his desire to return.
“I love the challenge,” Del Potro told ESPN of his injury struggles. “It could be a tennis challenge or a different challenge in life. “This is the toughest match of my career, because I cannot deal with these kind of injuries, this pain that I have now.
But I’m still trying and trying. “This is the life. I believe in myself that this is going to be in the past for sure. “But I think it’s also a message to the young kids, to all the players, to all the people around the world that they never have to give up following a dream and that’s what I’m doing with myself.”
The main thing for del Potro will be to stay healthy long-term. It remains to be seen how much can del Potro do in his first tournament in three years.
