Jamie Carragher says ‘a better manager’ than Sven-Goran Eriksson could have taken England’s golden generation to a major tournament final – but they shouldn’t have been expected to win it.
The 38-cap defender discusses the Three Lions’ gifted group of the noughties in new book How to Win the Cup: Secrets and Insights from International Football’s Top Managers and argues that a wider view needs to be taken on the strengths of other national sides at the time, not just England’s teamsheet.
Yet Carragher doesn’t believe the golden generation tag was unfairly attached to a group including the likes of David Beckham, Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand, even if it means people looking back at that era with nostalgia-tinged glasses now.
