Jennifer Brady, 28, reveals there were a lot of times during her injury period when she was “at a complete stop” and “didn’t really look like a pro tennis player.” In 2021, Brady reached her first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open but shortly after started to get heavily hampered by a knee injury and a chronic foot issue.

After concluding her 2021 Cincinnati run, Brady decided to take a break to address her knee injury and she had surgery. After being out for 23 months, Brady made her return to tennis two weeks ago at an ITF event in Granby.

This week, Brady officially made her return to the main level by beating Anhelina Kalinina 6-2 6-1 in the first round of a WTA 500 tournament in Washington.

Brady: There were times I didn’t look like a pro tennis player

“[It took] a lot of time [to get back here].

There were a lot of times I was at a complete stop. Didn’t really look like a pro tennis player. I lost a lot of my skills, muscle mass.. it took a lot of patience. I’m pretty happy with the way I came out, handled my emotions, stayed true to my game plan, and was able to come out with a win.

Tennis is a part of who I am, and I hope I never lose that. I’m happy to just be out here competing with the best,” Brady said.On Tuesday in Washington, former world No 13 Brady very routinely handled the job against Kalinina.

Brady claimed the first break of the match in the third game but Kalinina broke back instantly in the following game to tie the first set to two games apiece. However, it didn’t affect Brady, who then collected back-to-back breaks and won the next four games to seal the first set.

In the second set, Kalinina served out the first game of the set before Brady won the next six games to complete a two-set win.
