Daniil Medvedev reacts to losing world No.1 spot and reveals Novak Djokovic aim

Daniil Medvedev admits he needs to find consistency like Novak Djokovic does if he is to regain and hold his world No.1 ranking.

The Russian’s short spell as the world No.1 came to an end this week as he crashed out to Gael Monfils in the round of 32, meaning next week Djokovic will return to top spot despite not even playing in this tournament.

Last month, the Australian Open finalist became the first player outside of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray to sit top of the world rankings since February 1, 2004.

Medvedev says finding consistency like his rivals is key to his plans of dominating men’s tennis.

‘That’s the toughest part of tennis: to reproduce it time after time,’ he said.

‘That’s where the Big Three are just unreal, because no matter which conditions, no matter which surface, they are always winning tournaments a lot of the time or winning some crazy matches. Yeah, I’m going to need to try to do better.

‘Of course I want to be [in the No 1 spot] for a long time winning many slams, and yeah, you know, be there as many weeks as possible.

‘So I’m going to try my best, on practice courts, on the matches, Grand Slams, Masters Series, to win as many tournaments and gain as many points and try to be world No. 1 for long time.’

Indian Wells proved to be Medvedev’s first and last (for now) event since reaching the top but the 26-year-old struggled to live up to his billing.

Reflecting on his defeat he claimed it was nothing to do with the pressure of being world No.1 and he’s now looking forward to getting back to his best at the Miami Open next week.
