Joao Fonseca overcomes slow start, reaches QF

Joao Fonseca notched his third ATP quarter-final in Buenos Aires. The 18-year-old overcame a slow start against a lucky loser Federico Coria and earned a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in two hours and 12 minutes. 

A teenager lost serve three times in the opener. He raised his level behind the initial shot in sets two and three, keeping the pressure on the other side and breaking the rival’s resistance in the decider. Fonseca claimed one point more than his opponent.

He saved three of six break point and delivered four return games. Coria fought well and collected 14 points more than the young gun in service winners and from the baseline. Joao attacked with his forehand and fired 24 winners and 23 errors from his mighty wing.

The youngster made a fresh start in the second set, closing it with a single break and dominating the decider to remain on the title course. The Argentine saved a break point in the first game of the duel and made a push on the return in the next one. 

Federico landed a return winner and grabbed a break at 30. The more experienced player welcomed the rival’s forehand error in the third game, cementing the lead and forging a 3-0 advantage. Fonseca held after deuces in the fourth game and stepped in on the return.

The Brazilian caused the Argentine’s mistake and pulled the break back, reducing the gap to 3-2. However, he lost serve again in game six and fell behind. Fonseca lost his focus and sprayed a forehand error in game eight, suffering the third break and propelling Coria 6-2 up.
