John Cena Shouldn’t Retire from WWE

With John Cena serious about 2025 being his final year as an active professional wrestler, even WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler has chimed in, claiming that he hopes the legendary superstar doesn’t really hang it up. Recently, the latter announced that he would hang up his boots and retire from competing inside a ring, starting with the Royal Rumble, and will feature in a number of major pay-per-view events this year. However, according to Lawler, for a legend like Cena, retirement should not be brought into the conversation.
Appearing recently on “Sportskeeda WrestleBinge,” Lawler weighed in on the plans Cena has been hinting at regarding retirement. “I don’t think anybody should ever retire,” said Lawler. “There’s too many things that you can do without ever using the word ‘retire.’ When I hear about somebody retiring, I look for them to die soon. I would never say that he’s going to retire.”
Lawler Perspective
Lawler himself was a wrestling legend, and he said that there are just so many things the wrestler can continue to do outside of the ring. He said, of course, referring to the late Terry Funk, who was loudly opposed to retirement for a great deal of his career. Lawler remembered how Funk called him and said he wanted to do one more match-a match while he was sick. That example of the resilience and passion that Funk had for wrestling is why Jerry says Cena should avoid officially stepping away from the sport.
Cena, a 16-time world champion, has been a major figure in WWE for over two decades. Although he has taken on a limited schedule in recent years, his impact on the company remains undeniable.
