Daniil Medvedev sails past Nuno Borges at the US Open

The 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev will compete in his fifth quarter-final in New York in the previous six years. The Russian enjoyed a relaxed day at the office at Arthur Ashe Stadium, toppling Nuno Borges 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 51 minutes and remaining on the title course.
The 5th seed had the upper hand in every department, making a flying start and winning almost 40 points more than his opponent. The Portuguese raised his level in the third set, leading 2-1 before dropping five of the next six games, ending his best US Open campaign in the fourth round.
Daniil fired nine aces and delivered efficient numbers behind the first and second serve. He faced five break points and got broken once, keeping the pressure on the other side. Borges landed in 41% of the first serve and plagued his chances for a better result.
He gave away 57% of the points in his games and propelled the better-ranked opponent over the finish line.
Medvedev earned 16 break points and seized eight, taming his strokes nicely and hoping for more in the upcoming duels.
The 5th seed was off to a flying start, earning a break at love in the first game of the match after the rival’s forehand error. Daniil held for 2-0 and made another push on the return in the next one, welcoming Nuno’s forehand mistake and securing his second break.
The Russian saved a break point in the fourth game and held for 4-0, extending his streak. The Portuguese hit a double fault in the fifth game and faced three break points, missing a drop shot on the third and falling 5-0 behind.
Medvedev served for the opening set in game six and landed an ace, holding at 15 and wrapping it up with a bagel in 23 minutes. The 5th seed produced a fine hold in the second game of the second set and welcomed the rival’s double fault in the next one, securing a break and moving in front.
