Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp ‘hated’ subbing off Sadio Mane vs Atletico Madrid

Jurgen Klopp admits he ‘hated’ subbing off Sadio Mane during Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

With Mane on a yellow card, Klopp decided to take the Senegal forward off at half-time, having seen Atletico’s Felipe sent off in a dramatic opening 45 minutes.

‘The referee was [in control] but I really hate the moment when I had to take off Sadio Mane,’ Klopp said.

‘I hated it more than you can imagine but my worry was with any challenges, if any of them roll around, then Sadio is off.

‘You could see that every challenge in the air, you don’t know what could happen. I didn’t like it but in the end, you have to do it.’

Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages with a comfortable 2-0 victory over 10-man Atletico.

Diogo Jota and Mane both scored inside the first 21 minutes to put Liverpool in control, and Atletico’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dented when Felipe was sent off before half-time.

Klopp added: ‘In the second half it was a bit frustrating, of course, that’s how it is.

‘We lost a player through injury with Roberto Firmino. People want to see more goals but we did create more chances. I think the game was nearly perfect.

‘We scored the goals in the right moments. They were much more on the front-foot with how they started than the home game but we started well.

‘They were fantastic finishes as well, especially Sadio Mane. With the red card, well, you don’t like that, you don’t want to play against 10 men but in the end it’s 2-0 and it was a…
