Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has named his four favourites to win the Champions League and snubbed Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain.

Ajax, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Liverpool have all booked their place in the knockout stages after just four group games, with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds already confirmed as group winners.

It appears to be a fight between English champions Manchester City and French giants PSG for top spot in Group A, while Porto and Atletico Madrid are battling to join Liverpool in the next round from Group B.

Borussia Dortmund need to bounce back from two successive defeats to progress from Group C, while Group D leaders Real Madrid and second placed Inter Milan will expect to advance at the expense of Sheriff Tiraspol and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Despite their financial strife and Messi’s shock departure, Barcelona stand a good chance of progressing from Group E, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United lead Group F.

Red Bull Salzburg, Lille, Wolfsburg and Sevilla can all still qualify from Group G and Italian champions Juventus lead Champions League holders Chelsea in Group H.

Asked for his thoughts on the Champions League, former Germany, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan star Matthaus told Marca: ‘For me, the favourites for the Champions League are Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

‘Barcelona have their problems and Atletico Madrid have always been a dangerous team, but they are not as good a team as Liverpool or Man City.’

Holders Chelsea have made a superb start to the season and top the Premier League table by three points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

Liverpool have also enjoyed a largely promising start, bossing their Champions League group and sit within touching distance of leaders Chelsea.

Man City continue to impress domestically…
