Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was taken aback by Harry Maguire’s claim that Manchester United ‘lacked belief’ during their derby defeat to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side completely outplayed the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Saturday and cruised to a 2-0 win thanks to Eric Bailly’s own goal and Bernardo Silva’s tap-in on the stroke of half-time.

While it was another example of Man City underlining their desire and ability to defend the Premier League title, Man United are back at square one, having briefly appeared to recover from their slump last weekend with a 3-0 win over Tottenham.

In one of his post-match interviews, Solskjaer was asked if it is a ‘worry’ that some of his players admitted they ‘lacked belief’ during the derby.

But a baffled Solskjaer responded: ‘Have they said they lack belief?’

The interviewer replied: ‘[Harry] Maguire just said that in the second half the team or certain players lacked the belief that they could do it.

‘I know psychology is important to you, so how much of a worry is that and how can you address that?’

Appearing to accept the verdict, Solskjaer then said: ‘It is a big thing, we are human beings.

‘It is my job now to work on going into the next game with the right mentality, a winner’s mentality, and a more positive mentality.

‘Of course, when you play, you might lose belief during the game when you can’t get to the ball. These transitions that we are so good at, we just couldn’t get enough of them.’

Meanwhile, Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes urged his team-mates to ‘look in the mirror’ following Manchester United’s demoralising defeat.
