
Manchester United are willing to back interim boss Ralf Rangnick in January and bring in a holding midfielder, according to reports.
The balance in the centre of the park has been an ongoing conundrum for the Red Devils, with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer more often than not favouring a partnership of Scott McTominay and Fred.
In his first two league games since joining United – the 1-0 wins over Crystal Palace and Norwich – Rangnick has opted for the same duo as his predecessor.
But an upgrade in the position could be on the horizon, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that the club are prepared to sign a holding midfielder in the January transfer window.
Amadou Haidara is a player that has been targeted, with former Red Bull Group executive Rangnick instrumental in the 23-year-old’s move from Salzburg to current club RB Leipzig.
Responding to the speculation linking him with a switch to Old Trafford, the Mali international insisted he ‘feels good’ at Leipzig, but admitted he was a United fan growing up.
Meanwhile, the report states that the club aren’t expecting Paul Pogba to push for a move in the winter window, despite the French World Cup winner’s deal expiring in the summer.
The 28-year-old will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January 1 due to his current contract situation.
When quizzed on January transfers earlier this month, Rangnick said: ‘My opinion on winter transfers is clear. It needs to be a player who improves the quality, who improves the team to get better, it needs to be a high-quality player, no matter in which area of the pitch.
‘If it’s a midfielder or whatever it is, it needs to be a player who really helps us to get better.
