Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is in contact with Bayer Leverkusen over a potential pre-contract agreement, according to reports.

The 22-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and he is now free to negotiate with foreign clubs.

Nketiah has struggled for regular playing time under Mikel Arteta, with his appearances mostly limited to the Carabao Cup this season.

The Gunners academy graduate has netted five Cup goals, including a hat-trick against Sunderland in the quarter-finals, he is in search of more first-team football.

According to the Daily Mail, Bundesliga outfit Leverkusen have opened talks with Nketiah, who is currently set to become a free agent in the summer.

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace are one of the other teams linked with a move for the centre-forward.

However, speaking in December, Arteta expressed his desire to keep Nketiah at the Emirates, although he accepts the player needs more minutes.

‘Eddie has six months left on his contract and we are having discussions with him and the agents to try to find the best possible way,’ said Arteta.

‘Eddie knows how much I like him, how much I rate him and I would like him to stay at the club.

‘He is our player and someone that we raised and has the Arsenal DNA in his blood.

‘He loves the club so much and his reason is that he wants to play more football and that’s a genuine reason.’
