Mirra Andreeva downs Marie Bouzkova

17-year-old Mirra Andreeva will compete in the third round of the Madrid Open for the third straight year. The young Russian is 8-2 in the Spanish capital following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marie Bouzkova after nearly an hour and 50 minutes. 

World no. 7 had to dig deep to seal the deal in straight sets. She clinched the opener with two breaks and provided another in the closing stages of the second set before seizing her fourth match point and moving over the top.

Andreeva served at 51% and sprayed seven double faults. However, she performed well behind the first serve and defended three of four break points to mount the pressure on the other side. The young gun stole 44% of the return points and turned them into three breaks from nine opportunities.

A teenager closed the opening game of the match with a powerful serve and stepped in on the return in the next one. Mirra landed a drop shot winner for two break chances and drew the rival’s mistake on the first for an early break and a 2-0 advantage.

The Russian cemented the break with a hold at love in game three and created another break chance in the next one. Bouzkova denied it after the rival’s backhand error and held to get her name on the scoreboard. 

Andreeva had to dig deep in the fifth game. She survived deuces and held with a backhand volley winner for a 4-1 advantage. The 17-year-old missed a massive chance to provide another break in the sixth game following a wayward forehand. 

Thus, Bouzkova stayed within one break deficit and pulled the break back a few minutes later after the young gun’s double fault. Mirra kept her composure and generated five break points in the eighth game. The Russian seized the last with a backhand crosscourt winner and moved 5-3 in front.
