Carlos Alcaraz on Arthur Fils: ‘Powerful and tricky opponent’

Carlos Alcaraz and Arthur Fils met for the first time in last week’s Monte Carlo Masters quarter-final. On Saturday, the two young guns will embrace another duel in the Barcelona Open semi-final. Carlos will seek his 14th consecutive victory at this event.

He defeated Alex de Minaur in the quarter-final in straight sets. On the other hand, Fils spent 17 minutes on the court against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who retired in the third game due to an injury. Carlos praised Arthur and called him a powerful and tricky opponent. 

The Spaniard will try his best to overcome a dangerous rival and reach his third consecutive Barcelona Open final. However, he understands how challenging the task is. 

As we already said, Carlos and Arthur embraced their first duel in Monte Carlo. The Frenchman had a massive chance to top the favorite. However, Alcaraz prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 after two hours and 23 minutes of atomic tennis.

Two powerful players threw everything at each other, and Carlos had ti dig deep to prevail. The Spaniard dropped the opener and faced more issues in the closing stages of the second set. He overcame them and erased a 3-1 deficit in the decider to emerge at the top.

Arthur lost his focus in the pivotal moments and left the court frustrated. He will be eager to change that in Barcelona after knowing he has the weapons to challenge the four-time Major winner. Alcaraz played against 11 break points and suffered four breaks, three in the opener.

The Frenchman faced 14 break points and gave serve away five times, including those crucial breaks in the decider. They sprayed almost 100 unforced errors The Spaniard tamed his strokes more efficiently and outplayed his rival from the baseline.
