Fans were excited to see Tommy Billington step into the ring at “AEW Collision” on May 11, with “The Dynamite Kid” facing Dax Harwood. When he made his debut in AEW, Billington chose to use the name of his uncle and came out to “Rule Brittania”.

He struggled during the match, which lasted almost thirteen minutes despite this homage. Nonetheless, he did an outstanding job in the contest, even without winning it. However, recently, Billington confessed that he had initially doubted taking up the wrestling name of this great legend.

“I was never going to use the moniker ‘Dynamite Kid.’ In fact, it was like two weeks before AEW,” admitted Billington in a discussion on “AEW Unrestricted” podcast. He wanted to create his path in wrestling without looking like he is using his uncle’s name and fame for personal gain.

It was Bret Hart who convinced him otherwise and led him to change his mind about retaining this legendary wrestling title.

Bret Hart Persuasive Argument

Billington revealed that Hart had made a strong argument for him. According to Billington, “He actually said to me that Tom, I think you should use your name as well as Dynamite kid’s name because when I look at you, I see exactly how much you resemble him from your physical appearance alone or by listening or watching you,” Despite initial hesitations from Billington though Hart kept insisting on it for some weeks until he finally gave up after all.

“At first, I was kind of like, ‘Well Bret, I know what you’re saying, but no,’” added Billington. This led to Hart reiterating, “Tom, just use it; trust me, I’m not wrong, and people are never going to question anything where they can see your work ethic if nothing else”.

After agreeing on a trial period, there was a significant change in fan response, according to Billington. As he put it, “So, I was just like, after a couple of weeks, I’m like okay, I’ll give it a test run.
