Newcastle have confirmed they will be without Kieran Trippier for a lengthy period after the England defender broke his foot in the side’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

Trippier, 31, completed a £12million switch from Atletico Madrid to Newcastle in the January transfer window and hit the ground running in an impressive start to his spell in the north east.

The right-back remains unbeaten in the Premier League with his new club and found the net with a pair of stunning free-kicks in his last two matches against Everton and Aston Villa.

But Trippier went down in a heap just moments into the second half versus Villa and appeared in some discomfort as he hobbled off the pitch, with Emil Krafth coming on in his place at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe confirmed Trippier had been taken to hospital for an X-ray after Newcastle held on to secure victory and the ex-Tottenham full-back was later pictured wearing a protective boot around his left foot.

There had been hopes Trippier would make a speedy return to action, but it appears the Magpies will be without their January signing for a significant period which comes as a major blow to their survival hopes this season.

‘Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier is set to be sidelined for the club’s upcoming fixtures after fracturing a bone in his foot during Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa,’ a statement on the club’s website read on Monday morning.

‘Trippier underwent an X-ray immediately after the game and scans have shown a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

‘Everyone at the club wishes Kieran a speedy recovery.’
