There were worrying scenes at St James’ Park as Newcastle’s Premier League match with Tottenham was put on hold due to a medical emergency in the crowd.
The post-takeover party atmosphere in Newcastle turned to deep concern shortly before half-time, with players from both sides alerting referee Andre Marriner to a disturbance in the East stand.
Newcastle’s club doctor, Paul Catterson, was seen rushing across the pitch with a defibrillator to tend to the fan while Spurs held a 2-1 lead and play was suspended shortly after.
Applause echoed around the stadium as the supporter in question was carried away and taken to hospital. The Magpies have since confirmed the individual has been stabilised.
‘The supporter who was in need of urgent medical assistance has been stabilised and is on their way to hospital,’ a post on Newcastle’s official Twitter account read.
‘Our thoughts are with them.’

The incident evoked memories of Christian Eriksen’s collapse while playing for Denmark at this summer’s European Championships and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was on the pitch for both games.
