Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has stormed into the US Open quarter finals after crushing Russian world No.1 Daniil Medvedev 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-2 in four sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Aside from a second second wobble where the Aussie seemingly gave up after falling into an early hole, Kyrgios was in complete control.

The fourth round win means that Medvedev will now lose his world No.1 ranking while Kyrgios will progress deeper into the tournament than he has ever been before.

Kyrgios was dominant for most of his match against Medvedev in their fourth round clash

With Medvedev eliminated, the draw now opens up kindly for Kyrgios. With no Novak Djokovic [vaccination status] or Roger Federer [ongoing injuries] only Rafael Nadal looms large – and Kyrgios cannot meet him until the final if he reaches it.

Kyrgios will face world no.31 Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarter finals before a semi-final showdown against Italian world No.14 Matteo Berrettini or Norwegian world No.7 Casper Ruud if he can get that far.

The enigmatic Aussie has been cheered, jeered and booed in a match that has had everything including a running battle with the umpire, smashed racquets and one of the most bizarre shots ever seen in tennis.
