Novak Djokovic on training with Murray: ‘Some days I lack fire

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray came to Madrid early to prepare for the fourth Masters 1000 event of the season. Novak will chase his fourth Caja Magica crown and the milestone 100th ATP title. Still, the legend would love to peak at Roland Garros and chase more Major glory!

The Serb suffered an early loss in Monte Carlo, and he is not pleased with his level in the opening four months of the season. Novak reached the Australian Open semi-final and the Miami Open final but lacked consistency. 

Djokovic and Murray are working on fine-tuning ahead of the Madrid Masters debut. World no. 5 hopes to pass the first hurdle and see how things will unfold next week.

Djokovic claimed three titles in the Spanish capital between 2011 and 2019. He has not played too many matches at this event in the previous six years, reaching the semi-final in 2022 and falling in that cracking duel against Carlos Alcaraz.

Three years later, Novak wants to use Madrid as the test ground for further improvements ahead of his ultimate goal on clay, Roland Garros. However, the Serb would love to present his best tennis in Caja Magica and chase that elusive 100th ATP title. 

Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune are not in contention, and Djokovic will try to make a strong start against Matteo Arnaldi. 

“Andy and I are working hard to take my tennis to a higher level so that I can compete at my best at Roland Garros. My current level is not where we want it to be. We came to Madrid early, and I spent many hours on the court and gym.

We are trying to improve my game and body by a few percent. I do not have high expectations ahead of Madrid, but reaching that desired level in Caja Magica would be amazing. I hope to…
