Nigel de Jong urges Man Utd to copy Arsenal’s ruthlessness

Manchester United need to take a leaf out of Arsenal’s book when it comes to holding players to account.

That’s the view of former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong, who feels United need to ride out the tough moments like Arsenal have in recent months.

Things are finally starting to click for the Gunners under Mikel Arteta with a recent 5-0 win over Norwich seeing them consolidate fourth place in the league table, despite problems off the pitch including stripping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy.

Senior players at United including Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo were slammed for their behaviour in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle this week by Gary Neville in what was a disappointing team display.

De Jong has suggested United need someone with authority to take action when difficult situations like that arise, just like Arteta has done with Aubameyang.

‘At Arsenal, there’s a certain DNA within the club and it’s there for everyone to see – even when they’ve gone through tough times on the pitch,’ De Jong told Ladbrokes.

‘They always try to give opportunities to youngsters. That’s just a part of their DNA, amplified by Mikel Arteta since he took over, who is always willing to give young players coming up through the ranks a chance in the first-team.

‘They’re not afraid to make big decisions as a club to get experienced players out of the team in favour of their youngsters. I think it’s something you have to give Arteta a lot of credit for, but also the board, for sticking with him.
