Paul Merson urges Arsenal to ‘break the bank’ for Dusan Vlahovic

Paul Merson believes Arsenal need to throw money at bringing Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic to the club this month.

Arsenal will be in need of a striker given Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks unlikely to play for the club anytime soon following his exile from Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are both out of contract in the summer and Vlahovic has been identified as a priority target for the Gunners.

The Serb boasts 23 goals in all competitions for club and country this season and is also attracting interest from the likes of Tottenham and Newcastles.

Arsenal are said to be the frontrunners for the striker’s signature though and Merson is keen for Arsenal to act now.

‘Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is finished at Arsenal. He won’t be coming back from the Africa Cup of Nations,’ he told the Daily Star.

‘They should be breaking the bank to get Dusan Vlahovic in from Fiorentina in the summer – because he would make them title contenders.

‘I’ve heard he’s not interested in Arsenal right now and I can understand that. But he might change his mind if they finish in the top four and offer him a lorryload of money.

‘Arsenal would be able to play him every week because Aubameyang will be gone. Alexandre Lacazette will probably be gone. And so will Eddie Nketiah.

‘They will need a goalscorer, and Vlahovic scores goals. He’s also still young so he should get better and you’re not wasting money paying a 29-year-old on the way down.’

Arsenal strengthened last summer with Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White arriving to bolster their defence but Merson feels a proven striker is needed to take Arsenal to the next level.
