Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to attempt to sign England international striker Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
The Gunners are targeting a centre-forward given the uncertain futures surrounding their options in the position.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t played for the north London side since being stripped of the club captaincy in December, while the contracts of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are due to expire in the summer.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, with recent reports claiming the Gunners have made a £50million player-plus-cash offer including Lucas Torreira.
Watkins is another forward player who has reportedly been identified as a target for the club.
Villa brought in Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on loan for the remainder of the season, and he contributed a goal and assist on his debut as Steven Gerrard’s side fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Manchester United on Saturday.
Merson thinks Villa have got a ‘superstar’ on their hands in Coutinho, but with the Brazilian now at the Midlands club, he urged the Gunners to sign fellow attacker Watkins.
‘Aston Villa are crying out for a superstar,’ Merson told Sky Sports.
‘They have got one [Coutinho]. You don’t lose talent. You can’t teach that. That’s not taught.
‘This lad carried Liverpool, at times. It’s the way Steven Gerrard plays him, let teams worry about him, rather him having to track back some average player back to his own box.
‘But, if I was Arsenal now, I would go and steam in to try and get Watkins. If I was Arsenal.’
