Covid-hit Belenenses suing league official who told the club to face Benfica with just NINE players

Portuguese minnows Belenenses are suing league official who told the club to face Benfica with just NINE players after a coronavirus outbreak at the club – including a goalkeeper outfield – due to wrong information in the report for the abandoned match

  • Belenenses had nine players available for their Primeira Liga clash with Benfica
  • They named two goalkeepers in their starting XI and went without substitutes
  • There was an outbreak of positive Covid cases at the club, but they still played
  • Lowly Belenenses did not cancel the fixture in case they received a penalty
  • The match was abandoned but Belenenses are now planning to sue the league

The president of Belenenses, who were forced to field a team of just nine players last week against Benfica, is planning to sue the Portuguese league official who required his team to play.

Following a coronavirus outbreak in their squad Belenenses kicked off on Saturday with two players short of a full squad, including a natural goalkeeper at right-back – and trailed Benfica 7-0 by halftime.

The match was abandoned early in the second half after Belenenses went down to six players. Health authorities later determined that 13 cases of the new omicron variant were detected within club members.
