Daniil Medvedev wasn’t exactly convincing in his appraisal for his next Australian Open opponent Nick Kyrgios ahead of their match on Thursday.

The No.1 seed takes on the popular Aussie for a place in the third round in what is set to be a lively encounter with Kyrgios set to use the home support to his advantage.

During his first-round win over Liam Broady, the 26-year-old delighted a raucous crowd with tweener trick shots, Cristiano Ronaldo-type celebrations and even took a sip of a fan’s beer post-match.

We can expect similar antics in today’s meeting as he looks to extend his 2-0 record over the Russian and Medvedev is well aware of the dangers he possesses.

‘He’s definitely a character,’ Medvedev said.

‘You know, I think probably like almost everybody in the world, there are some things I adore in what he does and some things I don’t like.

‘I’m not gonna tell what exactly, but as you say, you know, he’s kind of going to extreme almost all the time he’s on court.

‘That’s why people love to watch him. Even if they hate him, they love to watch him, and that’s his strengths.

‘Our last match was so long ago and we are both so different and a different momentum of our careers that it’s really tough to count it.

‘As I say, win or lose, I don’t think these two matches gonna count into this one.’

Medvedev, the No.1 seed after Novak Djokovic was ruled out of the tournament after being deported, is no stranger to being booed and is not afraid to hold back on his views, most notably when he called out the crowd during a win against Feliciano Lopez at the US Open three years ago.

‘What I need to say again is that today I was losing 6-3, 2-0. I was painful in my abductor before the match,’ Medvedev said after the game. ‘I thought I’m not going to play… and you guys, being against me gave me so much energy to win. Thank…
