Road Dogg calls WWE a money grab but credits its leadership for smart business
Road Dogg's WWE exit produced one quote that traveled fast: he called the company, in its current form, a money grab. Strip away the headline though and his Busted Open Radio interview reads less as a takedown than as a portrait of a man talking himself out of a job he no longer believed in — and partly blaming himself for staying.
Brian James said the words. It just feels like WWE right now for me was a money grab, he explained, adding that it didn't feel right. But he spent as much time crediting WWE's leadership as criticizing it. He described executives as business people who do good business and called the company's record numbers impossible to argue with. To argue with that would be business stupid, he said. No business wants to be business stupid.
His complaint was about priorities, not competence. James framed it as a reversal: It felt like it turned into the business wrestling instead of the wrestling business, and in my mind, that's backward. Then the tell — In my wallet, it makes perfect sense.
That phrasing points to something bigger than one writer's discomfort. James tied the shift to a market with a real second bidder. With AEW able to match money, he suggested, retention and economics now shape calls that booking once drove. He was careful about how far up those calls were made, saying only that it seemed like more decisions landed above the writing room over time. That hedge matters. He stopped short of claiming inside knowledge of how cuts and signings are decided today.
The most revealing material had nothing to do with WWE's balance sheet. James, a Hall of Famer who has been open about his recovery, said money fear kept him in the chair long after the work stopped being fun.
