Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher insists he’s never been more wrong about a player than Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Arsenal’s decision to splash around £30m on the former Shefield United shot-stopper raised eyebrows in the summer with the club already having Bernd Leno in their ranks.
But Ramsdale has since usurped Leno as Mikel Arteta’s No.1 and has played a key part in Arsenal turning a corner and climbing to fifth in the Premier League table.
Carragher believes their is something different about this current Arsenal team than those who have struggled in recent years and he admits he got it wrong about Ramsdale.
‘Since I’ve come into punditry I’ve probably not been the most popular person with Arsenal supporters as they’ve always been really poor,’ he said on Wrighty’s House podcast.
‘This is the first time I feel almost excited by it because while I don’t think Arsenal can compete with the top teams but when you’ve got young players in you feel like you can get behind it and almost accept performances and results at certain times because of the age of the players.
‘It feels like there’s something about Arsenal right now it feels like there’s a coming together.
‘The keeper, I mean, if I’ve ever been wrong more about a player than Aaron Ramsdale then I don’t know which one it is yet.’
Arsenal got off to a rocky start this season by suffering three straight league defeats but have not lost since and now sit six points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
Carragher doesn’t believe the Gunners have enough quality just yet to challenge for the title but Arteta’s young team are capable of winning silverware in cup competitions.
