Sami Zayn's first world title reign is already over, and the way it ended has handed WWE a ready-made grievance to build around. On the July 6 edition of Raw, CM Punk returned to pin Zayn and take the Undisputed WWE Championship, closing a run that lasted just nine days after Zayn's breakthrough win at Night of Champions.
Zayn arrived expecting a rematch with Cody Rhodes, the man he had dethroned. That plan collapsed when Gunther ambushed Rhodes backstage and left him unable to compete. Rather than scrap the match, WWE kept the title on the line and inserted a replacement — Punk, appearing in his hometown of Chicago.
