Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has instructed the club to sign a new right-back and wants Tariq Lamptey, though the Red Devils are some way short of Brighton’s valuation.

Since the German coach took over the reins at Old Trafford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka – who has often been criticised for his lack of attacking output and end product – has no longer been the club’s undisputed first-choice right-back.

Rangnick has frequently started Diogo Dalot instead, though it appears neither player is considered a long-term solution.

According to the Daily Mail, the Portuguese full-back is considered defensively vulnerable at a time when Rangnick is trying to add solidity at the back, while there are worries Wan-Bissaka is simply not good enough going forward in the modern game.

As such, United are now ramping up their interest in Lamptey with Rangnick believing an upgrade at right-back should be one of the club’s top priorities.

The former Chelsea player has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe after leaving Stamford Bridge and is getting back up to speed this season after starting the campaign on the treatment table with a long-standing hamstring injury.

He only has one assist in his 13 appearances in all competitions this season, though he has been a threatening, adventurous, probing presence down the right flank for Brighton.

United value the 21-year-old, who moved to the Amex for a cut-price fee in January 2020, at around £30million, but that still falls some way short of Brighton’s valuation.

The south-coast outfit would expect to receive in the region of £40m, particularly with Wan-Bissaka having moved to Old Trafford for £50m…
