For once in 2021, Rachael Blackmore fell at the last.

The Irish jump jockey has enjoyed a stellar year, becoming the first woman to win the Grand National and be crowned the lead rider at the Cheltenham Festival.

But in the less familiar business of award ceremonies, Blackmore came a cropper – even if she did eventually add another trophy to her collection.

The 32-year-old had been one of the few sports stars invited to attend BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Salford on Sunday night. She had ridden earlier that afternoon in Thurles in Ireland and had a 5.30pm flight booked to get to Media City to appear on the show, which ran from 6.45pm to 9pm.

However, Blackmore’s flight was delayed by an hour because of fog and then, when she eventually landed in Manchester, she was kept waiting on the plane for half-an-hour.

By the time she finally disembarked, it was 8pm – just 30 minutes before she was supposed to be interviewed live in the studio. So the BBC had to quickly book an airport hotel room for Blackmore to speak over Zoom, where she learned she had won World Sport Star of the Year.
