Stefan Savic may have been lucky to remain on the pitch for the duration of Atletico Madrid’s clash with Manchester City, but that didn’t detract from his performance in the eyes of some.

L’Equipe named the Montenegrin defender their man of the match for his display at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night, giving him a rating of seven out of ten.

Savic was heavily involved in the late 22-man brawl at the end of the Champions League semi-final, dragging Phil Foden off the pitch, headbutting Raheem Sterling and pulling Jack Grealish’s hair as his frustration got the better of him as the Spanish side chased the game.

The referee cautioned the centre back when all had died down, with City supporters and UK pundits alike suggesting the punishment could, and should, have been more severe.

Yet despite his part in the ugly scenes, L’Equipe insisted that Savic had been the best on the park.
