Ian Rush insists he ‘can see why’ Steven Gerrard might be interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and says the England international would undoubtedly ‘strengthen’ his Aston Villa squad.
Gerrard has made an impressive start to his reign at Villa Park, winning two of his first three matches in charge and only losing 2-1 to Premier League champions Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Despite their recent wins, Villa are still only 13th in the table – six points above the relegation zone – and Gerrard will look to bolster his squad during the January transfer window.
Aston Villa have been linked with a loan move for Liverpool star Gomez in recent weeks and Rush can see why Gerrard would want to work with the talented 24-year-old.
Gomez has won Premier League and Champions League titles during his spell at Anfield but is yet to start any league games this season following his injury return and may be keen to get more game-time for the remainder of the campaign.
‘Transfer rumours are beginning to circulate, as always at this time of year, and one of the names being linked with a move away from Anfield is Joe Gomez, who has struggled for game-time this season as he continues his comeback from a bad injury last season,’ Rush told Gambling.com.
‘Apparently Steven Gerrard is interested in bringing him to Aston Villa and I can see why – he’s a quality player and there’s no doubt he would strengthen Aston Villa, that’s all Stevie will have in his mind.
‘But I think Liverpool would be wise to keep hold of him. There are always transfer rumours when the January transfer window is around the corner and it’s difficult to know what to believe, but I don’t see Liverpool looking to offload many players.
