Mohamed Salah became the first player in Liverpool’s history to score in nine consecutive matches as he found the net twice in the side’s thrilling 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The Egyptian has returned to his frightening best for the Merseyside giants this season and broke the deadlock in only the eighth minute of tonight’s action-packed Group B encounter.
It initially looked as if the goal would be taken away from Salah given it took a hefty deflection off James Milner, but the forward will have been relieved to see his name eventually pop up on the scoreboard at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Jurgen Klopp’s men appeared on course for a comfortable evening in the Spanish capital as Naby Keita doubled their lead with a thunderbolt in the 13th minute, but the hosts drew level thanks to a quickfire brace from Antoine Griezmann.
However, the match took another enormous twist in the 52nd minute as Griezmann was given his marching orders by referee Daniel Siebert for a high foot on Roberto Firmino.
The red card seemed to galvanise Liverpool and the pressure soon told as Mario Hermoso brought down Diogo Jota with a clumsy foul inside the box. Salah made no mistake with the resulting penalty and the visitors held firm for the remaining 12 minutes to secure victory.
The result saw Liverpool go five points clear of La Liga champions Atleti at the top of the group.
Such was Diego Simeone’s frustration, he declined the chance to shake hands with Klopp at full-time and instead sprinted straight down the tunnel at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Speaking ahead of the clash on beIN SPORTS, ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger named Salah as the best striker in the world on current form.
‘He’s top, top class and he’s certainly the best striker at the moment in the world…
