Daniil Medvedev was battling doubts following a disappointing start to the season as in Rotterdam he approached a Russian player and asked him “how to win a match.” After blowing a two-set lead in the 2022 Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal, Medvedev didn’t really look like his usual self in the remainder of the 2022 season.
At the start of the 2023 season, Medvedev picked up a semifinal exit in Adelaide before suffering a shock straight-set defeat to Sebastian Korda in the Australian Open third round. Just before his first match since the Australian Open, Medvedev asked a Russian player how to win his Rotterdam first-round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
“I was feeling bad. I was doubting myself before Rotterdam. I was not feeling good at all. I have a story. I went to one of the Russian guys getting ready for my match with [Alejandro] Davidovich Fokina. I won’t tell you who it is.
I was like, ‘Come on, man, tell me how to win a match’. He was like, ‘You know better than me.’ I was like, ‘No, I don’t know anything at the moment,'” Medvedev told Reem Abulleil of Arab News.
Medvedev: Now he is asking me if everything is okay now
Since returning to action, Medvedev is undefeated – the Russian won three consecutive titles in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. “After every tournament now he’s texting me, ‘So is it okay now?’ I feel ashamed.
But that’s how tennis is. I managed to keep some confidence going and I’m really happy about it,” Medvedev added. Over the last few weeks, Medvedev is looking like his old self. Last Friday, Medvedev also managed to beat Novak Djokovic in the Dubai semifinal.
With that win, Medvedev ended his four-match losing streak against Djokovic. Medvedev is playing great and he will certainly be determined to make a strong run in Indian Wells as well.
