Gary Neville still believes there are ‘big problems’ in the Manchester United dressing room despite their win over Tottenham and even claims some players actively root for their teammates to fail.
The Red Devils reclaimed fourth spot – at least until Arsenal have played – thanks to a stunning Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick at Old Trafford on Saturday, seeing off Spurs 3-2 in an entertaining encounter.
Interim boss Ralf Rangnick has only lost twice since taking over, but Neville feels there are still big issues with the team spirit and camaraderie at United and is not reading much into the win over Tottenham.
‘I think there’s big problems in that dressing room, I really do at this moment in time, between the characters in the dressing room that exist,’ Neville said on Sky Sports after United’s win.
‘I don’t think it’s great at all. To be fair, if Tottenham had got one in front at any point in the game you’d have seen it capitulate quite quickly.
‘There’s not a deep spirit in that dressing room, I don’t think, that you see in games. The performances are very patchy.
‘You get the impression when you see Ralf Rangnick’s interviews that he’s not enjoying the team that much, it’s not really in his name or in his spirit or how he wants to play.
‘He’s just trying to get through to the end of the season the best he can and do the best job he can, and he’s plastering over cuts and wounds that I think are deep.’
He continued: ‘If you don’t accept being left out, obviously you might have a problem with the manager, but your mate that’s gone it to play for you, you’ve got to make sure you look after him, you wish him all the best.
