Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool claim as Steven Gerrard is appointed Aston Villa manager

Taking charge of Aston Villa was a ‘no brainer’ for Steven Gerrard given the size of the club and a strong showing could put him in the ‘equation’ for the Liverpool job in the future.

That’s according to Jamie Carragher, a close friend and former team-mate of Gerrard, who of course wrote himself into Liverpool folklore by winning the Champions League alongside the iconic ex-England midfielder back in 2005.

Dean Smith was relieved of his duties last week after a miserable run of five straight defeats in the Premier League and Gerrard was officially unveiled as his successor this morning, calling time on his managerial spell at Rangers in the process.

Gerrard put himself firmly in the frame after steering Rangers to a first Scottish Premiership title in a decade last season and had been keen to launch a successful defence this term, with the club sitting four points clear at the top of the table.

But the pull of the Premier League ultimately proved too much and Gerrard is set to be in the dugout the weekend after next when Brighton travel to Villa Park.

‘I think Stevie would love to have added another league title and done four years there and won the title twice and they were in a great position to do that,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

‘It’s not a given, obviously there’s the second half of the season, but to come away from Rangers having two titles and also then going into that next job which everyone felt was always going to be the Premier League with a season in front of you is always ideal for a manager.

‘That’s where it may have torn Stevie. It’s halfway through a season, he’s straight into with Aston Villa, but in terms of going from the SPL to the Premier League I just don’t think it’s a decision.
