Eric Bischoff Expectations for AEW Forbidden Door 2024

This Sunday, from Long Island New York- the third annual Forbidden Door pay-per-view- will showcase some of pro-wrestling top independent talents like AEW, NJPW, CMLL and STARDOM. We will likely see some pretty big matches featuring AEW staples, as well as a lot of titles being defended by NJPW.
Swerve Strickland will clash with Will Ospreay for the AEW World Championship, and Jon Moxley defends his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in a battle against Tetsuya Naito. One of the biggest crossovers in professional wrestling history is just days away, and WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff recently aired his grievances on his “83 Weeks” podcast.
This style of programming is Guns Blazing set the expectations for at times, as Bischoff does a nice job attempting to let us know what can be expected here and makes sure that all are aware they remain watching quite possibly some more top-tier athleticism in wrestling.
“Great athleticism, probably a great example of what’s humanly possible from an athletic perspective inside the ring,” Bischoff said. Athletes are getting bigger, faster, stronger and just better in every sport. In pro wrestling as well.
Probably buckets of blood. It will show us very less in-ring story. The only story that will matter is the one within the die hard AEW fans minds, as much of this action people like to see it’s so non-sensical you’re unable to suspend any disbelief.
You are merely watching a showcase of physical skill.”
AEW: Gymnastics Over Story
Bischoff even compared watching AEW programming to an Olympic gymnastics routine. He even praises some displays of athleticism but bemoans the lack of storytelling.
AEW is mostly amazing acrobatics greatly devoid of story, not the matches with no stories attached,” he wrote. Bischoff has been less than positive on how different AEW’s strategy to putting a show together is as far back as March 2022.
Among the things he consistently gripes about is what appears to be a dearth of storytelling…
