Hyundai suspend Chelsea sponsorship deal following Roman Abramovich sanctions

Hyundai have announced they have suspended their sponsorship deal with Chelsea until further notice following sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich.

The South Korean motor company have been Chelsea’s ‘official global automotive partner’ since 2018 with their name shown on the sleeves of club shirts.

A statement from Hyundai read: ‘Hyundai has become one of the strongest partners in football over the years and the company supports the sport to be a force for good.

‘Through our partnership with Chelsea FC, we are proud supporters of the players, the fans and grassroots football.

‘However, in the current circumstances, we have taken the decision to suspend our marketing and communication activities with the Club until further notice.’

Hyundai are looking to distance themselves from the club after Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich had his assets frozen by the UK government amid his alleged links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine last month.

While Nike remain committed to its partnership with the Blues, shirt sponsors Three have already announced it is suspending its deal with the Stamford Bridge club on Thursday.

Chelsea training kit sponsor Trivago also look to be standing by the the club but hope for a change in ownership as soon as possible with Abramovich looking to sell.

A statement from the company read: ‘As a global travel brand, we believe in connecting and bringing people together.

‘These are values shared by Chelsea Football Club, an institution that is now 117 years old with a tradition so vitally important to its fans and communities, both locally and globally, and that is why we decided to partner with the Club last year.
