Thomas Tuchel has urged Timo Werner to rekindle the same form he showed before the international break ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Brentford.
Werner joined the Blues from German club RB Leipzig at the beginning of last season but struggled during his first campaign in England, scoring just six goals in 35 Premier League appearances.
Although his game time so far this term has been hindered by the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, the Germany international has shown signs of improvement when he’s been given a chance and scored a crucial second goal during Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Southampton in their last match.
Tuchel wants Werner to continue the form he showed during the match against the Saints if given a chance against their west London rivals on Saturday afternoon, but is worried that the two-week break may have hindered his momentum.
‘With strikers you feel sometimes that it is a little bit like this, that you keep them on the pitch and you keep the momentum going, but it is actually not only with strikers. It is about the actual form. It is about confidence – it is about the actual moment,’ he told a pre-match press conference on Friday.
‘We have so many games normally we cannot wait for players to re-find their full potential. Normally we want to have these guys on the pitch who are actually in shape, who have confidence and a certain momentum.
‘What we have to reflect on is Timo was not here, so he had a very good match, he scored the late winner against Southampton, that should give him a lot of confidence. But that was two weeks ago.
