Ally McCoist doesn’t understand why Zinedine Zidane is being overlooked for the Manchester United job.
The Red Devils are looking to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the summer that will see them finally announce Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent successor.
At present, widespread reports suggest Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and PSG’s Mauricio Pochettino are the leading contenders for the job with the former already being interviewed by the club.
But Rangers legend McCoist believes free-agent Zidane could be an ideal fit given his three Champions League and two La Liga triumphs when in charge of Real.
‘The one name I haven’t heard anything from is Zidane,’ McCoist said on talkSPORT.
‘Clearly, the one thing he can do and do on a regular basis is win the Champions League. He’s proved that. He did it three times with Real Madrid.
‘He can handle big players and big pressure and a big situation at a massive club so I’m not sure why he isn’t in the running at all. Unless he’s ruled himself out?’
The Frenchman has been linked with the Old Trafford job in the past but it’s thought he’s never been keen to take over a project midway through the season.
However, a full pre-season with United could be a more attractive proposition and former striker Louis Saha recently backed Zidane’s appointment.
‘I have to admit it’s a hard position to be in (for Rangnick), especially when you are an interim manager,’ Saha said.
‘Some players will think you don’t have all the cards in your hands, so it’s not easy, it’s really not easy. I would like to see Zidane appointed in the summer.
