Ainsley Maitland-Niles says he hopes to achieve ‘something great’ with Roma after joining the Serie A giants on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old was limited to just two Premier League starts in the first half of the campaign with boyhood club Arsenal and had been keen to secure a temporary move with a view to boosting his first-team minutes.

Mikel Arteta blocked Maitland-Niles from joining Everton last summer and the versatile England international could not hide his frustration at the time, saying ‘all I want to do is go where I’m wanted and where I’m going to play’ on Instagram.

But the Gunners were willing to give Maitland-Niles the opportunity to prove himself elsewhere this January and the defender come midfielder is clearly raring to go after being officially unveiled in Rome.

The Arsenal academy product will wear the No.15 shirt at the Stadio Olimpico.

‘I am just delighted to be here and can’t wait to crack on,’ Mailtand-Niles told Roma’s official website.

‘I want to help the team and show what I can do as a player.

‘Thank you to the fans for the support they’ve already shown me – I hope we can go on to do something great by the end of the season.’

‘With Maitland-Niles we are bringing to Roma a young player who fits well with the profile we were looking for to improve the squad and cover a number of different positions,’ Roma’s general manager Tiago Pinto said.

‘When we spoke to Ainsley we were really struck by his enthusiasm about the prospect of joining our group and having the chance to work with Jose Mourinho.’

More to follow.
