Mason Mount injury a concern for Chelsea after Club World Cup final triumph

Chelsea were delighted to win the Club World Cup for the first time in their history on Saturday, but an injury to Mason Mount took the shine off somewhat.

The Blues beat Palmeiras 2-1 after extra-time, with Romelu Lukaku opening the scoring and then Kai Havertz netting the winner from the penalty spot 115 minutes into the match.

However, long before that Mount had been forced out of the contest, appearing to suffer an ankle injury half an hour into the match.

The England midfielder looked in pain and was replaced by Christian Pulisic, although he left the field under his own strength, in no need of a stretcher or support.

Mount did look in serious discomfort during the post-match celebrations, though, and did not want to put any weight on his right leg, hopping around and leaning on another injured Chelsea man, Ben Chilwell.

In a video posted to social media by Chilwell, Mount’s right ankle was heavily strapped and appeared to have an ice pack on it as well.

Although he looked in good spirits as he celebrated with match-winner Havertz.

This latest problem came just a week after Mount was forced out of the FA Cup win over Plymouth, although it is unclear if it is the same injury or not.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel did not offer an update on Mount immediately after the game, but admitted that his side were lucky to score as a penalty shootout loomed large.

‘If you score late, you need luck to do it,’ he said. ‘We were relentless, kept on trying, didn’t stop. We didn’t give in. We had the lead, lost it again, but we never stopped attacking. So I think it’s deserved but it’s lucky if you score late.
