Pep Guardiola praised Kevin De Bruyne’s ‘phenomenal’ performance as Manchester City recorded a stunning 7-0 win over Leeds.
City ran riot against Marcelo’s Bielsa side as De Bruyne bagged twice to send them four points clear at the top of the table.
Goals from Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez, John Stones and Nathan Ake also ensured City fans enjoyed a memorable night at the Etihad.
But it was De Bruyne’s showing, that saw him score his first goals in two months, that stood out, including his second – a thunderous strike from the edge of the box that left goalkeeper Illan Meslier no chance.
‘We are solid in behind, we concede few chances. The team are performing very well,’ said Guardiola.
‘The last two or three days in training I said this guy [Kevin de Bruyne] is humble enough to accept he has to work.
‘He’s phenomenal. We need him. He’s so important for us.
‘He [Jack Grealish] plays exceptional. I don’t judge players for their goals. I want to see how they behave and their decisions.
‘He can play in three or four positions.
‘They are so honest and humble guys. John Stones plays centre-back for the national team but we needed him at full-back. I’m very pleased for him.
‘We are proud of the way we’re playing.’
City dropped points to Leeds last season and having seen Bielsa’s men narrowly suffer a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea last time out, Guardiola made sure his side respected the quality of their opponents in their preparations.
‘We lost five points last season when we played Leeds,’ Guardiola added.
