Antonio Conte provided a brutal assessment of his Tottenham team on Wednesday night – branding them a ‘middle’ team following a chastening defeat on his first return to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea take a 2-0 advantage into next week’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg following a dominant win over Spurs in Wednesday night’s first leg.
But Tottenham should count themselves lucky they didn’t lose by a greater margin as Chelsea missed a host of chances to put the tie out of reach before next week’s return leg.

‘I know the situation, it is very clear in this moment there is an important gap,’ said Conte, who sacked as Chelsea boss in 2018.
‘We have to try to fight to stay in the league in a good position, but if we think we are close, I think we are not in the right way.
‘It was a difficult game, difficult from the start, Chelsea showed to be much better than us.
‘If you compare the two teams there is not a comparison. We are talking about a team ready to win – today we have seen the difference between the two teams. We are a team in the middle.
