The Football Association has come underfire from Amnesty International for failing to publicly support stricken migrant workers ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
However, there was contradicting information regarding the FA’s stance towards improving working conditions in Qatar with Sportsmail sources indicating that the governing body has indeed communicated its support to UEFA and FIFA over plans to build a Migrants Workers Centre in the Arab state.
One of Amnesty International UK’s most senior directors has accused the FA of ‘lagging behind on Qatari labour rights issues’, comments that thrust the organisation’s role in highlighting the human rights controversies that have overshadowed the lead-up to the World Cup further into the spotlight.
England players are under growing pressure to make a public statement against some of the atrocities that have taken place in Qatar, where homosexuality is outlawed.
In welcoming a statement from the Football of Association Wales (FAW) which called for ‘significant improvement’ in the working conditions of migrant workers in Qatar, Amnesty also sought to highlight what they perceive as the English FA’s lack of public support regarding the issue.
