The hypocrisy of ex-star who rips Roger Federer for opinion on

The US Open has been overwhelmed by opinions and questions on Jannik Sinner’s doping issue. The Italian, who tested positive for clostebol last March in Indian Wells, has only lost points and prize money at the BNP Paribs Open, but has not been stopped, as happened to other tennis players for similar cases.

And opinion has been divided on the evident difference in treatment reserved for the young Italian compared to other players with cases similar to his.

The former tennis player Paolo Bertolucci, countryman of Jannik, has expressed his opinion on both the words of Roger Federer and those of Nick Kyrgios, who have had more or less cold words towards the story that has seen the young Italian as the protagonist.

The Swiss legend, in an interview with Today, said: “It’s not something we want to see in our sport, regardless of whether he did something or not, or any other player did it. I think we’re all pretty convinced that Jannik didn’t do anything, but the potential inconsistency is that maybe he should have sat out while they weren’t 100% sure what was going on.”

But Bertolucci didn’t like Federer’s words. “I didn’t like either of them on Sinner (he said also referring to Kyrgios, ed.). You have to shut up and let it go. You can’t take this anymore,” he said.

Now, the fact that Bertolucci is Italian and therefore partial to Sinner is obvious, seeing his words, but what shocks me the most is the hypocrisy of a former player who contested the words – in my opinion correct – shared by Federer on the matter.

But the former Italian player is wrong: we need to talk about what happened, to ensure that a similar mess never happens again. And Roger is right: regardless of whether Sinner did everything (or not) in good faith: the Italian should have been banned until the trial was concluded.
