Bianca Belair Champions Wrestling Diversity

[ad_1]

WWE’s Bianca Belair has been quite vocal about representation in the company and has appreciated the perspective of a Black woman, especially in wrestling. Some days back, while on the “Battleground Podcast,” she talked about her legacy and the new opportunities for women of color in the wrestling business.

During the interview, Belair touched on the progress made in the WWE since her joining and how her move to the company was at the right time. Belair thanked the women who came before her for the chances they offered her to express herself without being boxed in.

“However, I think some were calling in WWE, so I joined the company at an excellent time,” she clarified. “An audience came before and created this precedent when I could walk in without proper fabrics and scorn.

I did not have to seek approval. It was possible to be strategic about seeing oneself and creating things against the grain”.

Normalizing Success

Belair, who has held the women’s championship in the past, said that there was more to be fulfilled and that she was looking forward to being a change-maker for Black ladies in the wrestling field.

She, however, reiterated that instead of celebrating firsts, there should be a conversation on how to make it normal for women of color to succeed in the WWE environment. “I am proud to say I have been the first in many things.

That is wonderful. Those firsts have to be celebrated. But I think I am done with being that narrative. That it’s not an exception but rather the standard,” Belair stated. During her time with WWE, she noted that the representation of Black women was few, but that is changing.

Belair also spoke of the other members of her tag team with pride, Jade Cargill, and superstars Naomi, Michin, and Kayden Carter, as illustrations of this progression. Besides, a few neophyte black female wrestlers were also integrated into WWE NXT.
