Could the Boston Celtics be at risk of losing reserve forward Grant Williams to the Orlando Magic? According to new reporting from Heavy’s Sean Deveney, it could be on the table as a concern for the Tennessee alum’s restricted free agency. “He is 24, he has proven his chops, on both ends,” shared an anonymous Western Conference executive.
“You can’t coach that kind of experience. He’s got it. He is a perfect fit there,” they continued. “You want to become a playoff team, he is the kind of guy they’d want. But Orlando would have to overpay to get him and it is tough to expect a team to do that.
“Obviously, if you are Williams, you want to see the Magic being aggressive on the market,” observed the unnamed exec.
With recent reporting that the Celtics hope to retain both star forward Jaylen Brown with a likely supermax contract extension and Williams, it sounds as if it would take a truly substantial overpay on the part of the Magic to land the Charlotte native.
But as the old adage goes, it only takes one team to fall in love, making, perhaps, for a fairly intense offseason for Boston about to unfold.
