Former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino fears N’Golo Kante will never regain his best form and is burnt out after he was given the runaround against Real Madrid in midweek.

The France international has been a mainstay of successful Chelsea teams since his move from Leicester in the summer of 2016.

Kante, however, has struggled to maintain his fitness over the course of the last 18 months and looked a shadow of the player who bossed the latter stages of the Champions League last season in midweek.

The 31-year-old suffered the ignominy of being substituted at the break as Real’s veteran’s ran the show and provided the platform from which Karim Benzema was able to demonstrate his goalscoring prowess.

‘I hate to say this, and I’m not sure but have we seen the end of N’Golo Kante as the greatest, or one of the great midfielders in the last decade?’ Cascarino posed on talkSPORT.

‘I’ve been concerned for a while about the amount of injuries he’s picked up and he is always running everywhere.

‘He covers every blade of grass on the pitch and he does it brilliantly.

‘He is one of my favourite midfielders because he’s one of the most unselfish players you will see. It’s everything for the team with N’Golo Kante.

‘I do feel like he’s played himself out physically he looked burned out.

‘In midweek he was up against a 37-year-old in Modric, Kroos and Casemiro, not all as mobile as him and yet I thought he struggled.

Whether it’s injury and he can come back? I hope he can but I have looked at N’Golo in the last three months and thought have we seen the best of him is he starting to go on the wane? I hope I’m wrong because he’s been a terrific player.’
