What’s still on the line during Knicks-Nets, with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant sharing floor at MSG

Here’s what’s at stake on Wednesday night when the Knicks and Nets face off at Madison Square Garden:

The Nets can climb to the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference if they win their final three games. Finishing seventh allows Brooklyn to host a game in the Play-In Tournament. If they finish seventh, the Nets would have two chances to win one game and secure a playoff spot.

So, if the Nets beat the Knicks on Wednesday, the Cavaliers on Friday and close the season with a win over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, they can avoid having to travel for the Play-In Tournament.

“We’d rather be in the driver’s seat and sit comfortably and be able to control our own destiny, and I think that’s where we’re most comfortable,” Kyrie Irving said after scoring 42 points in Brooklyn’s win over Houston on Tuesday.

The Knicks have the chance to play spoiler on Wednesday – the Nets’ first game at the Garden with both Irving and Kevin Durant. New York has won 10 of 16 and is coming off of a dominant win over Orlando.

New York enters Wednesday’s game tied with Washington and New Orleans for the 10th-worst record in the NBA. So, any wins in their final three games could impact the club’s draft positioning (Though, the players probably don’t care about this and are competing to win every night.)

IRVING, KD AT MSG

Bruce Brown had a message for Knicks fans who will be at the Garden on Wednesday.

“I don’t think they want to say too many bad things because it’ll be two 50 balls tomorrow if they try talking,” Brown said after the Nets’ win on Tuesday.

Irving and Durant had 50-point outings in consecutive games earlier this season. They are two of the most prolific scorers on the planet, so the Knicks will have their hands full on defense.

It will be interesting to see how Tom Thibodeau approaches Irving. RJ Barrett, presumably, will spend time defending Durant on Wednesday.
