David de Gea says Man Utd ‘played like little boys’ against Liverpool

David de Gea has slammed Manchester United’s woeful defensive display against Liverpool saying the team ‘played like little boys’ in Sunday’s 5-0 mauling at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils went behind after just five minutes as Liverpool ripped them apart at will, netting four times in a disastrous first half which saw the home side booed off the pitch at the interval.

United’s defending was shambolic for several of the goals, particularly the game-killing fourth on the stroke of half-time as Mohamed Salah was left unmarked at the back post to fire past De Gea.

The Spaniard, who has been at the club for a decade, has not experienced many matches quite as painful as that and was livid with the way the side played.

‘It is difficult to describe how I feel now. It hurts and it’s not good enough,’ De Gea told Norwegian television station TV2 after the game.

‘We continue to let in silly goals and have done all season. We play like little boys and I have to apologise to the fans.’

He made similar comments on social media afterwards too, tweeting: ‘I feel the pain of our supporters, you give the team everything and we must do the same. I love this club and we will not accept this performance.’

Skipper Harry Maguire and left-back Luke Shaw struggled in particular against Liverpool’s high-pressing, clinical frontline and the centre-back apologised to supporters afterwards as he conceded they had not played at the level required.
